Mission Programs
Showcase Productions – the seven major Broadway shows the organization presents annually with casting of all ages.
Encore Theatre 4 Kidz – In 2006, the Wichita Theatre began a program just for students ages 18 and under. This program was implemented for the purpose of preparing students in acting, set building, technical design, and administration. This program has given many of the younger kids a starting point, even when maybe only a chorus role was available. Many of our older students are now capable of carrying lead roles in showcase productions due to experience many stage hours through the Encore Program. Parents of kids have informed the staff through the years how their child’s participation in this program has radically changed their child in such areas as interacting with others, ability to speak publicly, and participate in group settings. The enhancement in the self esteem that comes from a being a part of a team, which is what a production is, is probably the single biggest asset for our participants.
Kidz on Stage – Due to the overwhelming turnouts at auditions from ages 8-12, we are excited to announce a program just for the younger kids. This program is being launched for the 2011 season where two productions annually will be held on our upstairs stage. Kids may choose to participate in our performance academy for kids which will begin this fall, but not mandatory to be in the Kidz on Stage productions in 2011.
Camp Imagination – Since before the start of this organization, a summer “kids camp” was held at the Wichita Theatre for ages 8-18. The program has gone through a few changes during this time as it has had to be adjusted based upon the year-round programming. Once Encore started and gave all students year round opportunities, the Summer program lost traction. The organization converted it’s summer program to a workshop program for two years for ages 8-13, and in 2010 launched a very successful program, Camp Imagination which did a fast forward introduction to many theatrical topics with guest speakers daily on different topics.
Performing Arts Academy – In the spring of 2010, a small version was tested with vocal and dance instruction. In the fall of 2010, the programs will be expanded and marketed community wide for the entire school season. The programs will include: Dance, Vocal, Instrumental, and Performance. This is a tuition based program with both private and group lessons available.
Student Performance Days – The Wichita Theatre annually presents two of its productions, generally Encore Theatre 4 Kidz performances, to the community of schools and daycares. This has been well received through the years with as many as 700 coming in attendance from as far away as Lawton, OK. The teachers love it as it allows students to have a low cost experience of the performing arts in our historic 102 year old theatre.
School Movie Days – The Wichita Theatre makes available the theatre on a rental basis to schools to allow them the opportunity to view educational films which are appropriate for their students and selected by instructors. Teachers love this opportunity which allows them to utilize the facility throughout the school year on their schedule.
Daycare/School Reading Program – On age appropriate productions, our students will go in costume to schools and daycares to read the story of the production on the stage and distribute coupons to the students. Teachers and administrators love it when our students offer their time and energy for this program.
